CELEBRATING KNIX AT 40 YEARS - AUGUST 2008
In 1967 Buck Owens bought a little rock and roll station KYND-AM. Owens paid $350,000 and had the call letters changed to KTUF and format to Country. In 1968 he bought an FM station for $75,000 and renamed it KNIX (the “NIX”) for Phoenix and made it Country too.
KNIX promoted a lot of country artists on their way up. Group Alabama had concerts at Mr. Lucky’s nightclub in Glendale. Other performers such as Ronnie Milsap, Bellamy Bros., Eddie Raven used to drop by the station to chat. Sales offices were an old converted steakhouse and the studio was a shack several miles away.
Some years later KNIX moved to a building in Tempe and expanded several times to 14,000 square feet. They began advertising on billboards, then television commercials with endorsements of major country music stars.
On the 25th anniversary in 1993, Mike Owens who was the General Manager of KNIX picked up for KNIX two National Association of Broadcaster’s Marconi Awards!
Two major morning personalities W. Steven Martin, then Tim Hattrick and Willy D. Loon played a large part in building up KNIX.
In 1993 Clear Channel Communications purchased KNIX and several other stations. In 2002 Susan Karis-Madigan was named Market Manager for Clear Channel Radio and in 2006 Susan was promoted to Executive Vice President of Operations for the Western Division.
This month in 2008 we are celebrating KNIX-FM Radio for its star quality for 40 years. Who Knew!
If you want to see a Buck Owens original red costume (only costume outside the Owens Theatre in Bakersfield) and KNIX historic photos, visit House of Broadcasting Radio & Television Museum at 7150 E. 5th Avenue in Scottsdale.

TV MUSEUM WILL DOUBLE IN SIZE, $100,000 GIFT ALLOWS GROWTH
Dolores Tropiano The Arizona Republic May 17, 2003 SCOTTSDALE - Walter Cronkite's pipe collection and memorabilia from Channel 5's long running Wallace & Ladmo show will have a bit more breathing space thanks to a substantial contribution to the House of Broadcast in Scottsdale. Jack Clifford, one of the first faces on Phoenix TV, has donated $100,000 to the museum. The donation will help to more than double the size of the museum. "My hope is to make it a museum of real significance," said Clifford, who was hired by Channel 3 in the 1950's as the first sports anchor in the Valley. He later worked in sales and management at Channel 12, became president and CEO of a division of the Providence Journal Co. and helped create the "Food Network." The House of Broadcast holds 2,000 pieces of radio and TV history in a 1,950-square-foot facility on the second floor of Anthony's Gifts, 7150 E. 5th Ave. The museum educates visitors about the evolution of TV and radio in the Valley. An expanded facility would allow space for hundreds of display pieces that are in storage. Mary Morrison, president of the museum, said the contribution marks the beginning of a building fund. "Our goal is to establish a 5,000-square-foot permanent home for our radio and television memorabilia museum," she said. The House of Broadcasting was established seven years ago, as a display window in the former Chris-Town mall, and later moved to Scottsdale.

PRINCE LE MIEUX FROM TOVALU TOURS HOBI
 |
House of Broadcasting had a recent guest on March 16, 2007, guarded by Secret Service. Prince Le Mieux from Tovalu toured the museum. He was hosted by HOBI board member Dave Weiser, who said the prince was very cordial, spoke excellent English, is 6'2" and in his late 20s, was casually dressed and flanked by five security personnel. Tovalu is a 26-square-mile country with mainly coral reefs and is located midway between Hawaii and Australia. It's very understandable that Prince Le Mieux is very concerned about global warming.
In keeping with our royal visits, a princess toured the museum in 2006.
